Do's and Don'ts when Supporting Bereaved Families

“You have never been through what I’ve been through, so how can you tell me things will get better?” - Kaitlyn

We mean well, but sometimes our attempt to comfort bereaved parents causes more heartache. Saying nothing at all can be equally as hurtful. The following tips are meant to help your words be truly supportive and to alleviate some of the anxiety around "saying the wrong thing."

Helpful Things to Say:

  • I am so sorry
  • I am at a loss for words
  • I don't know what to say right now
  • I love you

Do not...

  • Do not offer cliches
  • Do not judge or offer advice
  • Do not compare losses
